Lima, Peru
Some hotels feel like a stay at a friend’s beautiful house by the sea, and Villa Barranco is exactly that. Tucked into a quiet corner of Barranco, Lima’s artsy seaside district, this restored 1920s mansion is warm, relaxed and full of character, just a short walk from the Malecón and the Pacific.
The Property
The house was built in the early 1920s by Polish architect Ricardo de Jaxa Malachowski, one of the great names of Lima’s architecture, and was declared a national monument in 1987. After a long restoration that brought back its colorful mosaics, tiled roofs and sculpted façade, it opened as a boutique hotel run by the Peruvian group Ananay, and later grew into the house next door.
Today it has just 18 rooms around gardens and an inner courtyard, with vintage furniture, art and books everywhere you look. There is a lounge and library, a rooftop terrace with ocean views and a bar, e-bikes to borrow, and breakfast that is served until the last guest wakes up. It is a house with a strong focus on sustainability: no single-use plastics and filtered water in glass bottles.
Why It’s Here
Barranco has two standout small hotels, and they suit different trips. Hotel B is the polished art hotel; Villa Barranco is the relaxed one. It’s one of the few hotels in Lima that welcomes families easily, with connecting rooms and young children staying free, and even dogs at no extra charge, without losing the charm of a historic house. It also matters that this is a national monument by Ricardo de Jaxa Malachowski, carefully restored rather than rebuilt: staying here is a way to experience Lima’s architecture from the inside.
The Rooms
All rooms are different, with king beds, vintage décor, a small sitting area, walk-in rain showers and air-conditioning. Most look onto the garden or the interior patio.
Deluxe Room: The most compact option, cozy and well designed, with a king bed that can be split into twins.
Junior Suite: More space, some across two levels, with garden or patio views and room for an extra bed.
Junior Suite Superior: Larger, with a freestanding bathtub; one has its own terrace, and some connect to a Deluxe Room, ideal for families.
Master Suite: The best room in the house, on the top floor, with a loft, a terrace with partial ocean views and a freestanding tub under a skylight.
My recommendation: The Junior Suite Superior. The Deluxe rooms are lovely for one night, but the extra space and the freestanding bathtub make a real difference, and the price jump is small. If it is a special occasion, book the Master Suite: the terrace looking toward the Pacific is pure magic.
Ideal For
Couples, families with young children, travelers who love design and history, and anyone who cares about sustainability. A great first or last stop on a trip through Peru. Less ideal for travelers looking for a full restaurant, a pool or a spa: it’s a small, intimate house.
