Sacred Valley, Peru
Andenia is the kind of small hotel you wish you could keep a secret. Just 14 rooms and garden bungalows on the road between Pisac and Urubamba, with mountain views from every terrace, a stone pool in the garden and a calm, contemporary Andean style. It is a peaceful, personal base for exploring the valley.
The Property
Andenia, a member of Design Hotels, sits among lush gardens and fruit trees in the heart of the Sacred Valley, with the mountains rising right behind it. Its design is simple and warm, with natural materials, locally crafted décor, textiles by Peruvian artisans and organic bath products, and no TVs in the rooms, so the views do the talking.
There is a restaurant cooking Peruvian dishes and comfort food with local ingredients, a lobby bar, a stone-paved pool with a hot tub and an outdoor shower in the garden, and yoga mats in every room. Spa treatments can be arranged on request, and the team can book your trains and entrance tickets to Machu Picchu.
Why It’s Here
Andenia is here because it shows the Sacred Valley at a slow, personal pace. It’s small, so the team really gets to know you, and the setting is lovely: a stone pool, gardens and the mountains right in front of you. It isn’t trying to be a big luxury resort, and that’s what I like about it. It’s also very good value for what you get.
The Rooms
All rooms have mountain views, a private terrace or balcony, walk-in rain showers, heating, filtered water and a yoga mat. Most beds can be twinned on request.
Superior Queen: The most compact option, with a queen bed and a private balcony.
Deluxe King/Twin: More space, with a king bed and a private terrace; an extra bed can be added.
Villa King/Twin: A standalone bungalow in the gardens, with a wood-burning stove and a window seat looking out over the garden.
Villa Two-Queen: A larger garden bungalow with two queen beds and a wood-burning stove, ideal for families.
My recommendation: The Villa King/Twin. Having your own bungalow in the garden, with the fire lit on a cold Andean night, is what makes Andenia special, and the price difference is small. Families will love the Villa Two-Queen.
Ideal For
Couples, honeymooners, small families and travelers who want a calm, design-led stay with great value. Less ideal for guests with limited mobility, for travelers who want a full spa, or for anyone who wants to walk to restaurants and shops: you will need transport to get around.
Good to Know
Location: Sacred Valley, on the Pisac–Urubamba road, about 15 minutes from Urubamba, at about 2,900 m altitude
Nearest airport: Cusco (CUZ)
Getting there: About 1 hour 30 minutes by car from Cusco airport. Ollantaytambo station, for the train to Machu Picchu, is about 45 minutes away
Price: From around $290 per night
Best time to visit: April through October is the dry season, with sunny days and cold nights. May, September and October are the sweet spot: good weather and fewer people than in July and August. November through March is the rainy season, when the valley is at its greenest.
Good to keep in mind: Check-in is at 3 pm and check-out at 11 am. Children up to four stay free in their parents’ bed. There is no parking, so arrange your transfers with the hotel. Pets are welcome.
Tip: Book a dinner at MIL, Virgilio Martínez’s restaurant above the Moray terraces, well in advance.
