Inkaterra Hacienda Urubamba

Sacred Valley Peru

Imagine waking up on a 100-acre working farm high above the Sacred Valley, with the mountains in front of you and breakfast made from what grows a few steps away. Inkaterra Hacienda Urubamba is a farm stay elevated to quiet luxury, and a wonderfully authentic way to experience the valley.

The Property

Built in the style of a colonial hacienda, the hotel sits on the slopes above Urubamba, near the village of Huayoccari. It has a terracotta-tiled courtyard, eucalyptus beams, Peruvian textiles and floor-to-ceiling windows that frame the Andes. Its heart is a ten-acre organic farm growing quinoa, giant Urubamba corn, native potatoes and medicinal herbs, which you can pick yourself and taste at dinner. The Mayu Spa sits between the orchard and a peppertree forest, with a hot plunge pool and dry sauna. As at every Inkaterra, guided excursions are included: birdwatching, a chicha de jora workshop, and twilight walks.

Why It’s Here

Hacienda Urubamba is here because it makes the Sacred Valley feel like a countryside escape. It’s a working farm on the hillside, with produce from its own garden, views across the whole valley and very quiet days. I like that it feels rooted in the land rather than dropped into the landscape, and the guided excursions make it easy to get to know the valley without planning everything.

The Rooms

There are 36 rooms in total. Twelve are in the main hacienda; the other 24 are standalone casitas scattered across the hillside, each with its own fireplace and a terrace overlooking the valley. Everything is warm and handmade: Pima cotton sheets, alpaca blankets and colonial furniture. Golf carts take you between the casitas and the main building.

  • Superior Deluxe: In the main hacienda, the most compact option, with a terrace.

  • Casita: A standalone cottage on the hillside with its own fireplace and a terrace with panoramic views over the valley.

  • Junior Suite: Only two of them, in the main building, with a terrace, a breakfast table and a complimentary bottle of pisco.

  • Suite: Just one, with a large living area and a sofa bed for a third guest.

  • Owner’s Quarters: A duplex with a fireplace and terrace that sleeps up to six, like having your own house on the hacienda.

My recommendation: Book a Casita. The fireplace, the privacy and the terrace with valley views are what make this hotel special, and they’re worth it over the rooms in the main building. For families or groups, the Owner’s Quarters is a hidden gem: a duplex that sleeps up to six, like having your own house on the hacienda.

Ideal For

Couples, honeymooners and travelers who love history, design and intimacy over big-hotel amenities. A perfect start or end to a Machu Picchu trip. Less ideal for families with young children who need space to run or for travelers looking for a pool and resort facilities.

Good to Know

  • Location: Sacred Valley, Peru, on a 100-acre farm in the hills just outside Urubamba, at about 2,800 m altitude.

  • Nearest airport: Cusco (CUZ), about 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes by road. The train station for Machu Picchu in Ollantaytambo is about 40 minutes away.

  • Price range: From about $450 per night, with breakfast, tea time and guided excursions included.

  • Best time to visit: April through October is the dry season, with sunny days and cold nights. May, September and October are the sweet spot: good weather and fewer people than in July and August. November through March is the rainy season, when the valley is at its greenest.

  • Good to keep in mind: Ask for a room facing the valley, because some at the back of the main building face the mountain. The hacienda is on a hillside, so golf carts take you between the casitas and the main building. Kids under 12 can sleep on a sofa bed. Check-in is at 1 pm and check-out at 10 am.

  • Tip: It’s lower than Cusco, so start your trip here to acclimatize before going up to the city.
