Hotel B

Lima, Peru

Lima is no longer just the city you pass through on the way to Cusco. It is one of the great food capitals of the world, and Barranco, its bohemian seaside district, is where it feels most alive. Hotel B sits right at its heart: a Belle Époque mansion turned into an intimate art hotel, just steps from the galleries, the cafés and the Pacific.

The Property

The house was designed by French architect Claude Sahut, who also designed Lima’s Presidential Palace, and completed in 1914 as a summer retreat by the sea. After a careful restoration with Italian marble, fine woods and its original skylights, the traditional Lima “teatinas”, it opened as a boutique hotel and is today a Relais & Châteaux member.

With only around 20 rooms, it feels more like a private home than a hotel. More than 300 works by contemporary Peruvian artists hang throughout the house, with curator-led tours for guests. There is a restaurant serving Peruvian and Mediterranean cuisine, an afternoon “lonche” (the Peruvian take on tea time), and a rooftop terrace with views over the ocean, perfect for a pisco sour at sunset.

Why It’s Here

Hotel B is here because it captures what I love about Barranco: art, design and a slightly bohemian spirit. It’s a restored early-20th-century mansion turned into a small hotel with its own art collection, and every room feels different. It shows a more creative side of Lima than the big hotels in Miraflores, and that personality is exactly what makes it worth including.

The Rooms

All rooms are individually designed, with original art, high ceilings and organic bath amenities.

  • Alcoba: The most compact rooms, cozy and stylish, with a queen bed.

  • Aposento: More space, with a king or twin beds and room to relax.

  • Atelier: The largest rooms, in the oldest part of the house, with a balcony or terrace.

My recommendation: The Atelier. The Alcoba rooms are lovely for a short stopover, but they are small, and the magic of Hotel B is in the historic part of the house. The Atelier rooms give you the high ceilings, the original architecture and your own balcony or terrace, which makes all the difference in a city stay. If you are only in Lima for one night before a flight, an Aposento is a good middle ground.

Ideal For

Couples, honeymooners, food lovers and anyone interested in art and design. A perfect start or end to a trip through Peru. Less ideal for families with young children or for travelers looking for a pool or a gym: it is a small, intimate house without resort facilities.

Good to Know

  • Location: Barranco, Lima’s bohemian district by the sea, a short walk from the main square, the Puente de los Suspiros and the MAC and MATE museums

  • Nearest airport: Jorge Chávez International Airport (LIM), Lima

  • Getting there: About 45 minutes to an hour by car from the airport, depending on traffic

  • Price: From around $370 per night

  • Best time to visit: December to April, Lima’s summer, with sunny days. From May to November the sky is often grey, but it is still a great time for food and culture.

  • Food tip: Book your restaurants ahead. Central, Maido and Kjolle are some of the most sought-after tables in the world, and Central is just a few minutes away in Barranco.
