&Beyond Mnemba Island

Zanzibar, Tanzania

Mnemba is less than a mile in circumference. There are no roads, no shops, no distractions. Just 12 open-air bandas tucked beneath casuarina trees, a stretch of white sand, and one of East Africa's most pristine coral reefs a few steps from your door.

This is not a hotel that impresses you with its amenities. It impresses you with its restraint.

The Property

Mnemba Island sits 4.5 km off the northeastern tip of Zanzibar, operated by &Beyond, one of the most respected names in African hospitality. The island is tiny enough that you can walk its circumference in under 30 minutes, yet it manages to feel like an entire world.

The rooms (bandas) are open to the ocean breeze by design, and the boundary between your room and the beach is nothing more than sand. Shoes are set aside on arrival and generally forgotten until departure.

The focus here is the water. The house reef is within swimming distance directly from the beach, no boat required. Daily diving is included, with some of East Africa's best dive sites within easy reach. The island also actively monitors turtle nests, maintains a coral reef nursery, and runs one of Africa's most committed marine conservation programs. &Beyond has made sustainability central to the Mnemba experience, not an afterthought.

Meals are served when you want them, light and fresh, with cocktails and uninterrupted ocean views. Yoga at sunrise. Dhow cruises at sunset. And long stretches of nothing in between.

Why It's Here

I've sent clients to Mnemba over the years, and the response is always the same: they come back different. Quieter. More settled. The kind of rested that takes more than a week at a regular resort to achieve.

Mnemba works because it removes everything that doesn't belong. No shoes, no schedule, no noise. What's left is the reef, the tide, and the particular silence of a place that takes its role seriously.

It's one of the most expensive stays on the East African coast. It's also one of the most justified.

The Rooms

All accommodations are Bandas — open-air beach cottages built close to the waterline, shaped in the soft spiral of a nautilus shell. Each has a private day bed, sun loungers, an al fresco outdoor shower, and direct beach access.

There are 11 standard Bandas and 1 Family Banda, which accommodates up to 2 children under 12.

My recommendation: Any standard Banda — the positioning is equally spectacular across all of them. Ask for one closest to the house reef if diving or snorkeling is your priority.

Ideal For

Couples looking for a genuine escape. Honeymooners. Anyone who believes that sometimes the destination is the hotel. Travelers who want to feel truly remote without sacrificing comfort.

Not ideal for those who need constant stimulation, prefer city energy, or feel uncomfortable spending a full day doing very little.
