Lion Sands Ivory Lodge
Sabi Sand Game Reserve, South Africa
Ivory Lodge doesn't look like much from the outside. Nine villas on a riverbank, deep in the South African bush, with no signal and no agenda. And then you see the view from your plunge pool, elephants crossing the Sabie River at dusk, fifty meters away, and you understand exactly what you came for.
This is quiet luxury in the most literal sense. Everything you need, nothing you don't, and Sabi Sand right outside the door.
The Property
Lion Sands Ivory Lodge sits on the banks of the Sabie River in the Sabi Sand Game Reserve, bordering Kruger National Park, one of the best wildlife destinations on the continent. Lion Sands is the only private reserve in South Africa with access to both the Sabie and Sand River ecosystems, and Ivory Lodge is its most exclusive property.
The lodge was rebuilt and reopened after a fire in 2022 with eight one-bedroom villas and one two-bedroom villa, each named after an African bird. The redesign elevated the main area above the river, creating uninterrupted views across the reserve. Every villa has a private plunge pool, sun loungers, a covered patio, and an open-air en suite bathroom with a freestanding soaking tub and outdoor shower. From the deck, the elephant parade to the river is not a highlight, it's a daily occurrence.
Big Five sightings within 24 hours are common. Leopard sightings are exceptional. All meals, beverages, and twice-daily game drives are included.
Why It's Here
Ivory Lodge offers the kind of safari where the lodge itself earns its place in the experience. The wildlife viewing in Sabi Sand is as good as it gets in South Africa. Sabi Sand borders Kruger National Park directly, with no fences between them, which means the same animals that roam one of Africa's largest reserves walk freely through the reserve. But Ivory Lodge adds architecture, privacy, and a level of refinement that makes the time between game drives feel just as intentional as the drives themselves.
The river views from the villas turn wildlife watching into something passive and constant. You don't need to be on a game drive to feel like you're in Africa. You just need to look up from your pool.
The Rooms
Suite — the core experience at Ivory Lodge. Eight riverfront suites, each with a private plunge pool, covered terrace, private lounge, and outdoor shower. Everything is oriented toward the river view and the wildlife that comes with it.
My recommendation: Any of the eight suites, ask for the one with the most direct sightline to the river when you book.
Fish Eagle Residence — a three-bedroom residence for up to 8 guests (6 adults + 2 children), with a dedicated chef, private safari vehicle, stocked pantry, wine room, and residence concierge. At 590m², this is essentially the lodge to yourself. The right choice for families or a group of close friends who want a fully private safari experience.
Ideal For
Travelers who want Sabi Sand's wildlife without sharing it with a crowd. Eight suites on the Sabie River means the animals come to you.
Ivory Lodge is also the right choice for anyone who wants a safari that doesn't look like a safari. The post-2022 rebuild produced something architecturally distinct, quiet luxury that sits in the bush without trying to replicate it.
And if you want to sleep under the stars in the African bush, the treehouses make that possible.
Not ideal for families with children under 10, or for travelers looking to combine safari with other activities in a short trip.
