Historic center, Cusco, Peru
A restored 16th-century convent near the Plaza de Armas, with Inca walls, colonial cloisters and its own small museum of archaeological finds.
The Property
El Convento occupies a 16th-century convent built over Inca foundations, a short walk from Cusco's Plaza de Armas. During the restoration, pre-Inca and Inca artifacts were uncovered, and today some of the original Inca walls can be seen under glass. Two exhibition halls display pre-Inca, Inca and colonial pieces, with daily guided walks.
There are 153 rooms and suites, most facing a stone courtyard, with marble bathrooms. The spa has a heated indoor pool, sauna and steam room, and supplementary oxygen is available to help with the altitude. The restaurant and bar serve Peruvian cuisine with local ingredients.
Why It’s Here
Cusco's most famous hotels are small and intimate, which is wonderful for couples but can feel tight with children. El Convento offers more space and services, a heated indoor pool and history children can actually see, from Inca walls to archaeological finds. It's the most practical high-end choice in the center for families.
The Rooms
There are 153 rooms and suites arranged around the convent's stone courtyards. Every room has oxygen enrichment, which helps a lot with Cusco's altitude.
Deluxe Room The most common category, with marble bathrooms and partial views of the city. A good choice for couples on a short stay.
Inca Wall Room Looks onto an original Inca stone wall. For travelers who want to feel the history from their room.
Family Room Two double beds facing the central courtyard. For families with children.
Courtyard Terrace Room One of only six rooms with a private terrace over the courtyard. For couples who want outdoor space.
Luxury Suite A separate bedroom and living area with a terrace. For longer stays or special occasions.
Imperial Suite The hotel's single top suite, with a large terrace overlooking Cusco. For a milestone celebration.
Our recommendation: A Courtyard Terrace Room. Windows don't open in most categories, so the private terrace makes a real difference. For families, a Family Room.
Ideal For
Families and travelers who want space, a pool and history in the center of Cusco. Less ideal for those looking for a very small, intimate boutique hotel.
